Ian wins at Mallory Park
Round 11 of the URS Classic FF2000 Championship was held in pleasant weather at Mallory Park in Leicestershire. Despite not racing at the circuit for several seasons, Ian was quickly into his stride and ended qualifying session in 2nd place, a tiny 0.045 seconds off pole position.
Ian made a good start but failed to take the lead from pole sitter Andrew Storer into the first corner, ending the first lap just 0.285 seconds behind the leader and starting to pile on the pressure. Ian made a lunge on the brakes into the hairpin on lap 4 but ran wide allowing Storer to regain the lead.
Despite the failed out-braking attempt, Ian was perfectly placed for another passing attempt into the first corner Gerrards, with Storer covering the inside line, Ian was forced to go around the outside. However, Ian made it stick and came out with the lead.
Store kept the pressure on Ian for several laps but eventually started to fall back and by lap 10 he was 3 seconds behind. The gap would stay pretty static until the end of the race with Ian taking his sixth win of the season from only his seventh finish.
With Ian's nearest rival, Lawrence Denne, suffering an uncharacteristic breakdown, Ian now leads the championship by 15 points with one round at Castle Combe still remaining. A points finish there will guarantee Ian the title, his fourth in five seasons.
